Merseyrail also publicly committed to aiming to be the best train-operating company in the U.K a few years ago. The total track length is 75 miles and there are 67 stations. Train services run on two lines, the Northern line (mental) and Wirral line (we don't have one of those!), and covers the Liverpool suburban area and Merseyside. The Merseyrail system was, at one point, one of the busiest British urban commuter systems outside London, and transported over 100,000 passengers a day. Not only that, but this underground system ALSO has a Northern line. Who knew Liverpool had a Tube, right?! Blew my mind. Now that's some atmospheric lookin' train vibes (Image: North West Rail Pictures/Creative Commons) It reopened a month later, albeit a little embarrassed. London Transport Museum Shop has a world famous collection of Travel and London Underground posters, Tube merchandise, gifts and souvenirs to buy online. And given that the London population sits at 9.4mil to Glasgow's 1.5mil, it makes sense too.įun fact: The Glasgow Subway also had a terrible first day at work, with an accidental carriage collision taking place and injuring four people. The Glasgow Subway allegedly services 13 million users a year, which may seem like a lot but when you compare it to the Tube, which is used by around 5 million daily in non-Covid times, it is put into perspective. It runs in a circle, kind of like a mirrored clock, with the outer ring operating clockwise and the inner anti-clockwise. And much like a middle child, it is stubborn and difficult - in fact, it's one of the only metros in the world that has refused to be expanded beyond its original route. Glasgow's secret subway (well it's not so secret if you live in Glasgow, but us Londoners think we're the centre of the Earth) (Image: Creative Commons)ĭid you know the Glasgow Subway is actually one of the oldest underground rail systems in the world? It's the world's third oldest and opened just six years after London's Tube became fully operational, in 1896 (London Underground opened in 1863 but became a fully fledged metro in 1890).īeing the third born, Glasgow is the middle child of the subway world.
